What is Girl Scouting?

Girl Scouts is an international organization dedicated solely to girls. In partnership with committed adults, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In Girl Scouts, girls discover the fun, friendship and the power of girls together.

Girl Scouts is the pre-eminent organization for girls. Our all-girl environment enables girls to get the one-on-one attention they need and the flexibility to try new things, explore interest areas not typical to females, and grow into well-rounded and self-assured women.

No matter what a girl's age, there is a Girl Scout program designed to meet her interests.
Girl Scouts is for any girl ages 5-17 who subscribe to the Girl Scout Promise and Law. We are committed to serving every girl, everywhere.

There are five age-levels which are targeted to a specific age group:

  • Daisy Girl Scouts (ages 5-6)
  • Brownie Girl Scouts (ages 6-8)
  • Junior Girl Scouts (ages 8-11)
  • Cadette Girl Scouts (ages 11-14)
  • Senior Girl Scouts (ages 14-17)

There is also another type of scout called a Juliette Scout. The Juliette program provides an opportunity for girls ages 5-17 to be a Girl Scout without being a part of a troop or group. She can participate in all the cool fun that Girl Scouts has to offer. She works on her own and closely with an adult to complete a variety of activities and community service projects. The Juliette program is designed to fit her schedule.

How Parents/Adults can get involved in Girl Scouts

Without adults playing many pivotal roles, Girl Scouting couldn’t happen.  Whether you’re a leader/advisor, parent or guardian, volunteer, or mentor, you awaken in girls their promise to develop their full potential.  Research shows that the influence one caring adult has on a child will last a lifetime.

Helping girls grow strong is a fulfilling and inspiring challenge and being involved means something different to everyone.  You can tailor your participation so that it fits right into your life.

What do adults in Girl Scouts do?

  • Expand horizons
  • Build values
  • Create a better future
  • Make a difference

Whatever they bring to the organization, our volunteers have one thing in common – a commitment to helping girls grow strong.  Opportunities are as varied as the girls we serve.  For girls to benefit from Girl Scouting, they need the guidance of concerned, caring adults – adults like you!

For some volunteers, that means working directly with girls throughout the year.  For others, it may be lending expertise for a specific short-term project or event.

What is a Girl Scout Recruitment Event?

At a recruitment event, girls and adults learn how to become members of Girl Scouts.  It is as much about recruiting parents as it is about recruiting girls. We can't have troops without girls. We can't have troops without adults.
