Girl Scouts Remember Founder's Birthday by Encouraging Women to Get a Mammogram

Juliette Gordon Low succumbed to breast cancer 81 years ago
Oct. 31 marks the birthday of Girl Scout Founder Juliette Gordon Low, who succumbed to breast cancer in 1927. In her memory, Girl Scouts would like to remind all women and their loved ones of the importance of mammograms and breast self exams.
The organization, now known as the premiere organization for girls, is approaching its 100th anniversary in 2012. Many troops today gather together to learn about breast cancer awareness and show their support through activities that help them earn the "In the Pink" Interest Project Patch. "My daughter, Trista, came to me as a teenager with lumps in her breast. Even though these turned out to be fibrocystic and very common...it was a real scare for us. She waited three months to tell me...I ended up waiting three more months before we actually got into a doctor....in that six months all kind of thoughts went through her and my minds," said Janice Bortner, Troop #7168. "She's agreed to help teach the girls in her sister's troop and help them earn the In the Pink interest patch."
It has been 10 years since then Senior Girl Scout Aruna Chandrasekhar earned her GSUSA Senior Girl Scout Gold Award by developing the idea for In the Pink, Breast Cancer Awareness Interest Project for Girls ages 11-17. This was the first of its kind in the United States. There is no doubt Low would consider that to be the best birthday present ever!
