San Jacinto Council receives 2008 TFA Excellence in Wood Design

Forestry AwardGirl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC) was presented the 2008 Excellence in Wood Design Award by the Texas Forestry Association (TFA). After careful consideration by a TFA committee, it was decided that GSSJC had impressed them with the direction the Girl Scout Nature Center project took to use the forest resources at Camp Agnes Arnold. Timber and lumber from trees at the campsite were used to build the Nature Center.

The Girl Scout Nature Center was designed for Scout use and the study of nature. It features an exhibit hall with showcases of birds, animals and insects, along with a glassed-end wall for an inside observation deck. To further foster an atmosphere of learning, there is a classroom equipped with computers and teaching aids. The workroom holds the supply cabinets, counters and tables. Girls step outside onto a pillared observation deck and have access to a multi-purpose workroom. The Nature Center overlooks Shadow Lake at Camp Agnes Arnold.

Texas Forestry Association is the non-profit trade association for forestry in Texas, representing over 3,200 members who grow, manage, harvest and process the forest resource in Texas. Today, the Texas Forestry Association, still guided by a conservation philosophy, has become more than just an association of forest-minded landowners, businesses and professionals. Today TFA offers programs for almost every Texan interested in conservation, business, history, education, wildlife and more.
